Project Lifesaver

Project Lifesaver International (PLI) is a community-based, non-profit, public safety organization whose mission is to assist families and caregivers of individuals with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The Lycoming County United Way (LCUW) is the local administrator for Project Lifesaver in Lycoming County. LCUW is responsible for determining eligibility, completing paperwork, reviewing fee schedules, distributing transmitters, and ongoing monitoring.

Individuals enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small personal transmitter around the wrist or ankle that emits a distinct tracking signal. If a participating individual goes missing, the caregiver notifies 9-1-1 that a Project Lifesaver participant has eloped, and a trained emergency team responds to the wanderer’s area. Most who elope are found within a few miles from home, and search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. Recovery times for PLI clients average 30 minutes — 95% less time than standard operations.
