Volunteer Opportunity

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lycoming County

Mission/Program Description:

The vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all.

Preventative in nature, our programs unite the agency case managers, volunteer mentors, and parents/guardians who work together to deter the occurrence of problematic behaviors in youth before they are able to take root.  Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.

Available Assignments:

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Becoming a “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” – Through role modeling, guidance and friendship, our volunteers (“Bigs”) fill a void for children who are critically in need of stable and supportive bonds with caring adults.
  • Taking part in “Bigs in School” – High school students become friends and mentors for elementary children in need of socialization and academic assistance
  • Assisting with leadership – Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for skilled, passionate board and committee members to help grow and guide the agency.  Committees include: Agency Development, Brand Awareness, Volunteer/Mentor Development, and Events
  • Serve as an Americorps*VISTA volunteer – MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! Responsibilities of this position include volunteer recruitment, mentor retention, agency outreach, and fund development.  VISTA is like the domestic Peace Corps and members serve as a catalyst for positive and sustainable change

Volunteer Requirements:

Potential Bigs (volunteer mentors) will be interviewed by agency staff to assess compatibility, interest, and suitability.  In addition, successful candidates must pass police background and child abuse checks.

A Big is asked to spend several hours a week for at least a year with their “Little” engaged in everyday activities both enjoy.

Application Process:

Please contact the agency with your initial inquiry.  Staff will guide you through the process.
