Susquehanna Council Boy Scouts of America
Youth Development Program

The Lycoming County United Way provides funding for the Comprehensive Youth Programs described as follows:

Cub Scouting

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting.  It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age).  Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the 10 purposes of Club Scouting.  Nationally, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA’s three membership divisions.  Locally we are serving 425 youth & their families in nine Lycoming County Communities.  The 10 purposes of Cub Scouting are:

  • Character Development

  • Spiritual Growth

  • Good Citizenship

  • Sportsmanship and Fitness

  • Family Understanding

  • Respectful Relationships

  • Personal Achievement

  • Friendly Service

  • Fun and Adventure

  • Preparation for Boy Scouts

Boy Scouting

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in 1910 to provide a program for community organizations that offers effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness training for youth.  Specifically, the BSA endeavors to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit; have a high degree of self-reliance as evidenced in such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness; have personal values based on religious concepts; have the desire and skills to help others; understand the principles of the American social, economic, and governmental systems; are knowledgeable about and take pride in their American heritage and understand our nation’s role in the world; have a keen respect for the basic rights of all people; and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to American society.  Five-hundred ninety-five young men ages 11-18 years participate in programs of character & leadership development in nine communities in Lycoming County.

Venturing

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age.  Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.  Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities.  Local community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community.  The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.  100 youth ages 14-21 years participate in programs of character & leadership development in nine communities in Lycoming County.

Exploring

Exploring is Learning for Life’s career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old.  Exploring's purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.  Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities.  Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community.  The result is a program of activities that helps youth peruse their interests, grow, and develop.  Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career skills.  Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis:  career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.  35 youth ages 15-20 years participate in programs of career exploration, life skills, citizenship, character, and leadership education in three communities in Lycoming County.
