American Red Cross
Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES)

The AFES, originally known as SMF (Service to Military Families), is mandated by Congress.  Red Cross is the only organization authorized to act as a liaison for military personnel and their families when an emergency happens, either at home or throughout the world.  The target population is military personnel and their families.  This is a very important service that is given little recognition.

The Northcentral PA Chapter is one of the few selected chapters in the country that provide this service with local volunteers.  Volunteer duty workers are scheduled everyday, 365 days a year, to receive emergency calls for our service men and women. Verification of the emergency must be done by the Red Cross worker before a communication will be accepted and forwarded to military officials.  A pager is dedicated to the AFES program to provide this emergency communication.
